You can expect to see up to 5 times speedup on your regular dial-up connection.

SpeedBoost can be installed on any of the following operating systems provided that Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0 or greater is installed.

Windows 95
Windows 98
Windows 98SE

Windows NT 4.0
Windows 2000
Windows XP
Mac OS X

Newer versions of Microsoft Internet Explorer are available free of charge through Microsoft.

How does SpeedBoost compare with DSL or cable modem access?

SpeedBoost is an affordable, software-only solution designed to significantly enhance Web access over low-speed (less than 200 kbps) connections. DSL and cable modems provide high-speed service through telephone or cable lines.

DSL and cable are broadband technologies, which means they provide faster service than the enhanced dial-up service SpeedBoost Web Accelerator brings you. However, our SpeedBoost service is considerably less expensive than DSL or cable, and is available wherever dial-up access is available.

The speed of your dial-up service will stay the same with respect to:
  • Streaming media, audio, and video files
  • Secure pages—like the ones used for online banking and shopping
  • MP3 files and executable programs

Is SpeedBoost compatible with other browsers?

The SpeedBoost software will automatically configure Internet Explorer for SpeedBoost. With other browsers, SpeedBoost should work with any web browser that allows you to specify an HTTP proxy. You must set the HTTP proxy host in your browser to be "localhost" and the port number to be "5500" (without quotes). Consult your browser's help documentation for information on how this can be done.

Does SpeedBoost speed-up my secure (HTTPS) transactions such as online banking?

No. SpeedBoost does not accelerate secure transactions. Secure websites will continue to work, but will not be speeded up.

How does SpeedBoost speed up my email?

If you are using an email program, such as Outlook, then email text and body are compressed in emails. All document type attachments (eg. Microsoft Word) are compressed. Image files which are linked to a website within an HTML email are compressed. Image files which are attached to the email, and executables are not compressed.

Which email programs does SpeedBoost work with?

SpeedBoost is designed to work with Microsoft Outlook and Outlook Express. It has also been initially tested using Mozilla, Netscape and Eudora, and should work with these clients.
